Orphan to Hoodlum to Disciple of Jesus Christ!
Joshua Netzer has had an incredible journey... He was born in Rapid City, South Dakota and grew up in a broken home. His dad was never there and his mom was always partying. He was raised by his older sister (who was just 2 years older), and his grandma. He was in and out of a few foster homes. When he was around 4 years old, his Aunty & Uncle stepped in and adopted him. He grew up in a "Christian" home... although it was more "religious" than "Christian".
Two weeks after graduating from High School, Joshua moved to Laveen, Arizona with his sister. For 2 months, he wasn't doing anything but drinking and partying with her. Some old High School friends asked him to move with them to Tempe. He got to know some people in the neighborhood. He started stealing and thought it was okay. He was living a party life with lots of drinking. He was a fighter... He had the mentality that he could fight anybody. He was lost. He would accept anyone's direction... whether it was good or bad or wicked. He didn't care. He lived this way for two years and was searching for something better. He tried different trade schools. A month before coming to The Door Tempe church, Joshua wrote a letter to God: "I'm lost. I'm broken. Get me out of here. My heart is hard and cold." His girlfriend Ivana got the address to the church. A Kris Hart Revival was happening. The message that was preached gave him hope! "Jesus Christ died on a cross...", "...Can mend your broken life." At the altar call at the end of the service, Joshua raised his hand to receive salvation and went forward. Nate Bia prayed with him. That was 4-1/2 years ago, and it changed everything! Being a born again Christian affected the way he dressed, walked, and carried himself. It changed the way he thinks. And it cleansed his heart!
Shortly after accepting Jesus' Gift of salvation, a major change took place. Joshua and his girlfriend Ivana had been living together in sin. Joshua didn't know what fornication was, but Ivana did. Pastor Aulson and his wife Michele challenged Ivana that she knew what she needed to do. Joshua had expected not to get married until he was 30 or 40, but Ivana told him "we need to make it right with God and get married". Pastor Mammen paid for their marriage license because they were so broke. Carlos & Cassia Saucedo were their witnesses and they got married in Pastor Aulson's office on 3/14/14. Joshua has been helped and encouraged to be a good husband by learning and applying God's Word. Also by hearing the preaching of the Word. The Holy Spirit convicts him of sin and righteousness, and shows him what he's doing wrong. Joshua spends a lot of time in prayer. He asks God "What do I need to do next?" God speaks directly into their issues through preaching, books, and encouragement from others. He's learning the importance of repenting, coming to the altar and making a change.
Another aspect of Christianity that has been a blessing for Joshua is being a part of the church family. He's seen different people from different backgrounds all come together as one. His church family encourages him and helps him. "People really care about my soul. They'll be there when I call. This is such a big difference: coming from parents who didn't want me, into a church family who loves me, helps me, and wants to see me make it!"
For Joshua, the contrast of life before and after being born again is remarkable. Since becoming a Christian, he has experienced more mental clarity. He no longer has confusion of what his life is based on... He knows that it's based on Jesus, the "Rock of our Salvation"! He regularly looks to the Bible to clarify what's right. He has discernment in his spirit and more of a sound mind... Joshua has peace. "The God of heaven is looking past my sin and sees Jesus' righteousness on me"! That's just the beginning (salvation). There's joy and hope for the future. And joy seeing people get saved. It amazes him that God can use him to reach others... To minister to their hearts and minds... To bring them out of despair... Joshua says, "this is so much better than any money!"
Joshua has some advice about how to give priority to your relationship with Jesus: "I've been lost. I've been there thinking I can find my own way. You'll find out that the way you want to go yourself won't work out for you. Hitch your wagon to Jesus Christ. You won't fall. The only way you'll fall is if you quit. Honor Him first. God has blessed me so much."
Joshua and Ivana have two children, Ava and Titus. They are Bible Study leaders in the Tempe Church and are faithfully serving God in the weekly Outreach ministry by helping out with preaching, prayer, music and drama. Joshua has been called to preach and is being trained by his pastors to someday be sent out to start a new church in another place. His life has been transformed and he exemplifies the scripture in 2 Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come."
