"And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, 'He has done all things well. He makes both the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.'" -- Mark 7:37

JoEllen O'Bryant is a living testament to that verse! In May of 2016, on the last day of the Tempe International Bible Conference, Pastor Wayman Mitchell ended his morning seminar with an offer to pray for the sick. He specifically asked for anyone in the audience with a deaf ear to come up for prayer. (Background:  Prior to this day, JoEllen was basically deaf in her left ear. She had 2 surgeries before and had lost a lot of hearing. It was very frustrating for her. She couldn't hear, especially at food fellowships with other people from church. She had prayed to God, "I can't live like this!") Pastor Mitchell laid his hands over her ears and asked her to repeat after him... "The blood of Jesus"... "sets me free!"... He stepped away from her on her left side and asked her to repeat that truth again. JoEllen had some hearing improvement, but still couldn't hear very well and told Pastor Mitchell that. He then asked her who she needed to forgive, and then led her in a prayer renouncing and repenting of unforgiveness. He once again asked her to repeat after him... "The blood of Jesus"... "sets me free!"... He kept moving further and further away from her repeating those phrases, and she was able to hear him out of her left ear! This was very, very exciting for JoEllen. Her ear doctor had previously told her that she'd lost hearing bones. Her dynamic of hearing that morning, (and still today), is different... JoEllen says, "I can hear now!!"

Looking back, JoEllen can see that God began working in her life and drawing her to Himself when she was in her teens. First, her best friend Johnna got saved. JoEllen met Steve when she was 16. When she was 17, she moved in with him and they were living in sin. She was a fornicator and their life was a big party, including using drugs and alcohol. She also sold pills. It was a life of chaos! Steve got saved first. He was changed overnight, and JoEllen was blown away. She thought, "if God could change him, He could definitely save me!" At that time they were still living together. In November 1983, a few weeks after Steve got saved, JoEllen was invited to a fashion show that was put on by the ladies at The Door church in Tempe. She accepted Christ in her heart that evening. Unlike Steve, it wasn't an overnight change for JoEllen. She had lots of anger and was hateful. Over time, God delivered her from these things!

JoEllen has had a few "surprises" during her 33 years of being saved. Before the miracle of healing in her left ear last year, she's experienced other miracles of healing: 1) A golf ball sized bump had grown on her wrist. A visiting Evangelist prayed for her and she watched that bump dissolve in front of her eyes! JoEllen says, "I know that God is a healer... just ask and contend for it - He wants to heal us! There's hope!" 2) Because of office work, she was experiencing shoulder pain. She asked for prayer from her Pastor and he said for her to put her arms out. She had a knot in her back that immediately felt like a pretzel untwisting as she was prayed for! 3) After a Home Bible Study earlier this year, JoEllen threw her back out while they were playing basketball. Her Bible Study leader asked her to sit back in a chair and as she extended her legs out in front of her, she was shocked to see that one of her legs was 2 inches shorter than the other one. As the leader prayed, they watched the shorter leg grow out to the same length as the other one, and her back was healed! Seeing God answer prayers of healing has built up JoEllen's faith and has encouraged her to pray for others.

Because of her own experience, JoEllen has some advice for someone who has been praying for something for a very long time: "Keep contending... God hears us...He does love us... It's in His timing... You can't give up!"

Jesus Christ has helped JoEllen to be a better woman, wife and mother. Through His Word, the Bible, He has helped her and guided her. Through preaching, she has been redirected and refreshed. He has honored her faithfulness and obedience. He has helped her to be a hope to her girls and her family. This is the prayer that JoEllen prays and tries to live out: "Help me be sensitive to the needs of others. Help me to be a testimony - not an excuse."
