Ben Mavis III (before)
Inmate #172332, Arizona Department of Corrections

This is the testimony of a "church kid". (A child that was brought to church by their Christian parents. As true for all of us, every person must make their own decision about following Jesus Christ... regardless of their family name or other credentials.) Ben Mavis III is the youngest of 4, and the son of Pastor Ben and Angie Mavis, (presently pastoring in Peoria, AZ). Ben has lived in Arizona all of his life. Although Ben was raised in church, (he was 1 when his dad got saved and guesses he probably missed less than 5 Sunday morning services between the ages of 1 and 18!), he never made a decision for God as a young person. He moved out of his parent's home when he was 18 and quickly got a TV. Ben got saved for a short time when he was 19, but it only lasted for about a month. He got into trouble with the law at age 21 and had to spend 2 years in prison as a result. When Ben was 23 he got radically saved and served God for 1.5 years. Then he got in trouble with the law again, and this time he had to spend 8.5 years in prison.

It was during this second time in prison that something happened that got Ben's attention. Ben's nephew had passed away and this was one of the hardest times of Ben's life. Ben was really broken over losing his nephew. Ben had a lot of influence on him and his death raised many questions in Ben's mind: "How could I have helped him?" "How am I to blame?" "Was it my fault?" For the next few months, Ben took lots of drugs. But on 6/1/15, the prison was on lockdown and God touched Ben's heart! Ben surrendered to God and prayed to receive Jesus as his Lord and Savior. He experienced the true miracle of salvation and the grace of God for his life. He was set free from all the bondages of his sin. He made commitments and cut things off that were going to sabotage his relationship with Jesus!

When Ben first got out of prison in 2016, he started getting involved with social media. He's thankful for a good Pastor that helped/directed and navigated him through that. Since being a born again Christian, the main thing that has changed for Ben is that he is drug free! In addition to his drug use in the past, he was also involved with perversion and was in and out of relationships... but now that he's been living for God, he has peace and victory over these areas. He has a goal to serve God.

There are several areas in which Jesus has helped Ben to be a better man: He goes to work on time and is productive. He doesn't steal. He's not smoking dope. He makes good decisions. He no longer has road rage.

Ben has some advice for other "church kids". He says that some of the things he did as an adult were from decisions he had made when he was young. As a kid, he had opened himself up to some of the stuff... "You gotta fight and watch out what you open yourself up to, (anger, rage, perversion...) Keep yourself from that. Watch out!"  To the rest of us, Ben wants to say, "the mercy and grace of God is so so good! God is faithful. I appreciate that... the faithfulness of God. Come home and see -- God is good... and so so faithful!"
